Silicone Gel Breast Implants - Cancer Risk

Many studies have been done looking at the risk of cancer in women with silicone breast implants vs. those without. The preponderence of data from these studies has has not shown that there an increased risk of cancer with either silicone or saline implants.

At the time of the silicone breast implant controversy in the media, the FDA reclassified silicone implants to be similar to a totally new medical device. The manufacturers of these implants were instructed to begin clinical studies as if silicone implants were new medical devices that had never been tested. This study is under way and patient who meet the criteria can ask to be included. The early data from this study also fails to show an increased cancer risk.

See the Silicone Breast Implant page for details of the adjunt study, including a description of who may be included.
